ipod touch rules! - 22 Mar 2008

everything about the ipod touch rules. id explain all the features but i think the product description probably does it better than i ever could.
i bought this as a present for my girlfriend for christmas and she loves it.
the device is sleak and shiny, super thin and feels remarkably sturdy for its "8mm thin shell" or whatever gimmicky way apple have of saying how fat it is.
the 16gb flash drive in it doesnt seem to be a problem for her size wise. it still holds plenty of tunes and videos, just it probably wont hold your entire music collection, but itunes is great at organising all of it between your comp and touch. the on screen keyboard takes a bit of getting used to but once you have its very easy to use.
wireless connectivity is a brilliant addition to the web browsing capabilities but no bluetooth means you cant use your touch with your mobile phone for GPRS/3G/HSDPA internet access on the go.
there are only two problems that i have with this device:
1.) it does not support flash so a lot of modern sites wont work with it, especially a lot of you-tube type sites that use flash video, though youtube is supported through its own 'app' individually. apple dont seem to care about flash support either so i wouldnt expect it anywhere in the near future.
2.) the headphone jack and socket are different to normal 3.5mm jacks so a normal set of headphones wont work with this device which makes it a pain in the bum getting it to work with your home stereo without some DIY headphone modding.
Overall though, this device is superb. Beyond original and with the gadgetry and usability that make it a wonder of technology that for its size is ahead of everything else ive seen.
i would say this device could come close to replacing a home computer if you really wanted and could give on a few points.
Great digital music player - 20 Mar 2008

I spent ages trying to decided what digital music player to get and in the end I was seduced by the iPod Touch
STORAGE 5/5
Space storage isn't such an issue for me since I'm not used to having several gigabytes of music with me. I quite happily fit all the music, video clips and photos I need for work and personal use within 16GB. I suppose the real test will come when I go on holiday and leave the laptop behind but I still think it'll fit enough variety of my media.
USABILITY 5/5
Child's play! Touch screen interface is great. And the "accelerometer" gives you the best options for viewing on a small screen.
APPLICATIONS 4/5
Music app: If you've seen the ad you know what it can do and it's very accurate. Great stuff.
Video app: I love it. So far I've only managed to convert one of my DVDs to watch but I have numerous short clips I can study whilst on the road which is a big bonus for me. There's lots of info online about converting clips for your iPod.
Photo app: Since there's no camera I haven't used this much. But I've created an album to keep a small selection of photos to show friends/family and there's fun in showing them on the iPod Touch.
Syncing for these apps is simple through iTunes and iPhoto on your Mac/PC.
Safari/Youtube/iTunes store
It's great to be able to surf the web and check out Youtube clips when you have wifi access but I've not really found a real functional use for these yet. I really like the usability of zooming in/out on web pages though. Perhaps when I'm holiday and have wifi access in the hotel this will be a big bonus. Syncing your bookmarks through iTunes is also simple.
Other apps (extra £12.99 from iTunes):
I bought this without the software updates since I figured that most of the software requires interent/wifi access anyway. However I ended up getting the updates since I do get a fair amount of free wifi access from locations in London. But so far I've only made use of Mail.
There's great potential for future apps.
OVERALL 4/5
Had a couple of inconvenient buggy, required turn off/on, moments but otherwise I'm happy with my shiny new toy.
ACCESSORIES
Remote control earphones: There aren't any made specifically for the iPod Touch but luckily SOME* remotes made for older iPods will work. I just got an in-Line Remote Control iPod Video/Nano All Generations from Amazon (£5ish inc P&P) and it works great.

Delivery Excellence - 07 Mar 2008

Hi All,
I am sitting at my desk at work and cannot wait to get home and plug in my new iPod. My review is based on the excellent delivery service I received. I ordered my Ipod Touch yesterday at about 2pm and received it today at the same time, all of this on normal delivery by royal mail!
I have never been so pleased with the time taken of oredering something online to when it reached me. Now all I have to do is find a way to get out of work early and get home to rock out with my new toy.
To Buy or not to Buy - I Pod Touch - 07 Mar 2008

0 out of 0 found this review helpful.
I have had my I pod Touch, for just over a month, and if like me you were unsure whether to fork out £200, this may help.
The good points first -
It really does what you see in the ads. The slick moving of pictures; pinching and increasing the images; sensing the orientation of the device. All super smooth. It almost seems like alien technology, and it can't fail to impress all who see it. Very slick, very pretty, very impressive.
Using the device is very intuitive. Even my wife was browsing through it, and she thought MP3 was a new bus route.
The music sounds crisp and clear. I am not an audiophile, but it sounds fine to me. I have invested in some decent headphones though.
I have purchased some software (Cucusoft Video converter) which makes a breeze of converting your DVD's to MP4 format, for uploading to the device. Watching movies on it is oddly enjoyable, and the big screen is a pleasure. Screen is fine, no probs with brightness etc. I love watching Pixar films on it. Most films convert to well under 1GB.
The wireless internet access is great. Browsing you tubes catalog is getting worryingly addictive, also they seem to have just about any music video you can think of. The internet resizes itself onto the screen, and I love the way you can easily type things into boxes. Its so easy and intuitive. Amazing. its also good fun to try to log onto all those unsecured networks you will invariably find. I have purchased the Email and other bits - worth doing this.
Itunes store - you can use the device to preview and buy any music. its very easy and quick, and a great way to discover new music. Tracks vary in price, and come complete with Album covers, which look cool on the browsing finger flick mode. Software is available to overcome the Protected Music, to enable Itune purchased tracks to be played on any MP3 device. Software is also freely available to replace all those missing arts. I use 'I-tunes art importer' which cleverly pulls art from amazons site, and sticks onto your Itouch.
Memory
I have uploaded around 1000 songs and 3 films. About 5GB left out of 16GB. Once films are watched, I delete them off. Memory needs to be managed, otherwise you will run out of space. I can't justify spending over £300 on a 32 GB version.
Email
Fine. Works. Looks good. Opens PDF's. Easy to use once you have set up the
account properly.
Bad Points.
Thankfully not many.
First gripe - the battery under internet use, will not last long. Maybe 1-2 hours, it drains away fast. However plenty for a film, and maybe 2. Fine for music, because you can easily shut off the screen, and still listen. Hours worth here. I have bought a mains adapter, and plug the unit in if I am upstairs and using Wi-Fi.
Music Volume - Could be a touch louder. On some tracks I am maxed out. However I am no longer 20, and my hearing isn't 100% ! You can use Itunes to adjust track volumes (right click, get info, options). Still not crashingly loud though. On most tracks though, I am OK.
Wi-Fi. Drops out sometimes. Bit annoying. Unsure if its the I touch or the signal.
Memory - for me not an issue. As I have said, manage your devices memory.
Other points -
I highly recommend the protective cover - "Invisible Shield" http://www.invisibleshield.com/
It is superb, you can barely see it on your device. I bought both together from Amazon. I found it easy to put on. Lifetime Guarantee. £20. Protect your unit in style. The touch screen is in no way compromised, and still works with the faintest of touches.
I have so far resisted the temptation to jailbreak my Itouch. Mainly because the software you can get seems pretty crap to me. Oh and of course it invalidates your units own warranty. For those who wish to try, there is plently of advice on You-Tube. My mate has done his.
Last point - I bought some Sennheiser noise cancelling headphones (PCX 250) for my journey to OZ and back. At £85 they were quite expensive, but the way they cut out airplane noise was significant. Very good buy.
Finally -
Is an Ipod touch worth it ? Yes.
Do I begrudge spending £250 on a unit, and the protective cover. No
I am very pleased.
Its OK, but - 26 Feb 2008

-The instructions are rubbish.
-Its way over priced in the UK, its a 3rd of the price in the US. Why are we being ripped off?
-The touch screen looks nice when you get it out of the box, but then becomes immediately grubby once you start to use it.
-the DRM really cripples the device.
-If you are the vacuous poser type - then it looks nice, so you can pretend you are someone you aren't.
