Awesome out of the box - 17 Aug 2007

This product completely lives up to expectations, its one of the reasons I love Apple product so much, they do what they tell you, with no unexpected gremlins and setup takes as long as it takes for you to plug the cables into the appropriate ports.

Some knowledge of computers and iTunes manipulation will make your experience a richer one, for example if you download Handbrake (its free) you can rip your pre-owned DVDs into your library and save yourself the costs of downloading movies through iTunes. You also get better quality visuals and on my 37" i've not experienced any blockiness or grainy images.

You won't regret buying this product, you'll feel so superior when you see your friends manually inserting DVD discs in their player when you can just click through your menu and play what you want. Or when it streams your photos and puts on slideshows for you while playing music from your library.

1 word of caution though, there are no data cables included in the box and you will need to purchase this separately. Without this, it won't work.

You will love this product, it is awesome out of the box!

Simply The Best Media Player System ! - 22 Jun 2007

I have tried them all: Media Systems attached to the tv which stream from your pc, Windows Media Center, and many others. This is by far the best ! I bought the 160GB version, and I have not had one regret so far ! Amazing menus, and I have just downloaded my entire iTunes onto the hdd. Setup is as simple as can be: turn your pc on, open iTunes, ensure your network is up and running, and turn on the Apple TV. Note the code on your tv, which the Apple TV creates, then waddle over to your pc, tap that into iTunes (which would have already seen the Apple TV box on your network). You can then either stream or transfer the iTunes files. I opted to transfer, as it will then have everything without the pc being on. Goodness, could it be any easier. The menus and the remote are very responsive and it keeps things simple and user friendly. Video playback is a bit grainy, as these films, etc are designed for an ipod, and not your 50 inch display in the lounge ! However, if you are not used to High Definition SKY, etc, you will not see the difference. In fact Apple are going to release versions of films, etc for download in a resolution that will be in sync with a 50 inch display. So no fear for the future ! If you have a friend in the states, ask them nicely if you can put credit on their bank account and use the US iTunes. They have TONS of excellent stuff ! I am not saying that I have done this, but it's quite simple: iLibs, then copy across Libraries. The Apple TV is now an integral part of my entertainment system. It's an exceptional system, and sounds great either via the hdmi, or the optical output. I can only highly recommend you purchase one ! You will not regret it !

Apple TV - 02 Jun 2007

I am very impressed with what Apple has brought into the living room for those with media on their computers but not on their widescreen HDTV. Now, thanks to this wireless box (ex. the power cord), you can sync your iTunes library from your Mac or PC and stream from up to 5 Macs or PCs. Setting up the Apple TV could not be simpler - take out of the box and packaging, plug in the power cord and boom - you're done. However, due to the many ways you can connect Apple TV to your TV, Apple did not supply any form of cable to your HDTV. So, you have the choice of choosing what cable you want (e.g. HDMI - HDMI, HDMI - RGB, Component etc.) but it means you have to fork out £20 or so for one of these cables ontop of Apple TV (I recommend getting the cables from Amazon as they are roughly £12). Once you have connected it to your TV, it turns on asking for what computer it should sync to and to what iTunes library - you then have to turn on your computer and log in to your user area. Once it has found the iTunes library, it will ask you to type in a password on your iTunes in order to prevent the stealing of your music etc. The computer then syncs your Apple TV "in the background" whilst you can make yourself a cup of tea! If you have the latest Apple Airport Extreme from Apple with 802.11n, syncing will be a breeze and will be a bit slower with the previous 802.11g and b versions of a wireless router. Once it has finished, Apple TV loads up the menu with all your media from Movies, TV Shows, Music, Photos, Podcasts and, coming in late June via an update, a YouTube selection which allows you to watch YouTube videos, sign-in to your account and rate and comment videos. The bad point about the media on iTunes is that Apple have not announced any TV Shows or Movies for download yet - unlike in the US where fellow Apple fans can buy movies such as Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, and TV Shows such as 24. This is annoying because it is nearly impossible to watch movies or TV shows on your new toy. Yet, if you download a program for the Mac called "Handbrake" you can rip your favorite DVD's and sync them to the Apple TV. However, this is a long and tedious process and could take up to an hour to rip a movie and even longer to rip an entire season of a TV show. The Apple TV also comes with a remote (which is the same remote used for new Macs and iPods with a universal dock with an IR port) which is very simple and easy to use. Don't worry about the battery though-it is a watch battery which lasts a long time and, unlike other Apple products, the battery can be replaced (see the manual for more details). In conclusion, Apple TV is a very useful product, especially if you have a large iTunes library and you want to watch a movie or look at photos on your new HDTV for example. However, it is very pricey for what it is - as per usual with Apple - 40GB for £200 is rather unfair for the consumer as when you start up the machine, there is only 33GB available due to the OS taking up 7GB of data. But Apple has shone a beacon of hope for those interested in purchasing Apple TV as it has announced a 160GB version which is available from the Apple Online Store now and is coming soon to the Apple Retail and other stores including Amazon and costs £270. Finally, it is annoying that Apple has not included any HDTV cables as it means having to fork out more money to even set it up. If any of you are unsure about buying Apple TV, I would recommend it as in the future, Apple with add new features (possibly recording digital TV and being able to surf the web through your router) via online download so things can only get better for it if you are disappointed with your purchase (which will be unlikely!) Recommended.

Good...But - 29 May 2007

This is a great product. There's lots of room to expand on it and it's probably going to sell quite a few HDTVs if you don't already have one. The only downside is a lack of supply of cables; either HDMI or Component RGB. Yep, the drive is a bit small although it'll probably see an upgrade from Apple soon. Failing that, the drive can be upgraded to a 120/160/200GB standard notebook harddrive although some understanding of computers would be required.

This review concentrates firmly on what this item is rather than isn't. If you want to stream itunes content (not games) to your HDTV this is perfection. Essentially it takes a snapshot of your computer's contents and stores it wirelessly to itself meaning that you don't have to have your pc on to hear / see the content.

It is ridiculously easy to set up though please note that if you've secured your network you may need to add the MAC address into your routers settings.

I absolutely love this bit of kit - my lounge now has music again and I can view photos without having to jemmy granny into a tiny study to peer at a 15" screen.
