Archos 605 wifi 160gb - 24 Mar 2008

What a great product. Small problems now and again and the cost of the plug in's are a pain but generally a great piece of kit. The plug in costs are £25 for the web, £15 for the mpeg format for movies and £15 for AAC format for movies which comes to a grand £55. This is the only real problem with the player and Archos but everything else is really good. The quality of movie play back is fantastic and the web great even when catching up with the skynews on the toilet in the morning ..... hey beats reading the paper !! It is great for travelling and the battery lasts around 3 hours normally. The docking station is a must and will set you back another £50. It recharges the unit quickly (around 3 hours) and although you can charge through the USB this will take double that time if not more !! I love my unit and it is great fun and great to dock into the station and show the family photo of holidays on a slideshow etc or using it as a TV recorder for record Corri street or Eastenders !!
So it is a great product but with everything included will set you back around £350. Enjoy

This is an amazing little device. Its still a bit buggy, but really, the rest of its features more than makes up for this.
You do need to have quite a bit of patience because in the end you can normally get over all problems after a bit of time.
For example, my USB connection stopped being recognised by my computer but i fixed it by uninstalling my old ipod programs.
I was going to send my Archos back after a week but kept it to try it out a bit more and managed to discover how everything worked and suddenly all the pieces of the jigsaw started to fit together.
Sure its complicated, so dont expect to figure it all out ina few days, you wont!
Some things to remember:
1. Make sure you set the location and language. You might think its obvious, but even though it comes in English, its probably set to USA times, so this will mess up the TV scheduler for example.
2. If the Archos is behaving stragely, just hold down the power button on it for 15 seconds so that it reboots, this usually fixes most problems.
3. If you get the GEN5 dock (which is virtually essential) make sure you fit the Archos in it carefully with the attachment which comes with your archos (not the gen 5) on top. It can sometimes not slot in properly... practice makes perfect.
4. If you use Sky + or Sky HD like me and want the Archos to record from it, disable the power saving option on the Sky+ setup menu and also set the Archos to Thomson receiver when setting up the infra red codes.
5. When setting it up with your wifi, make sure you select 128 bit or 64 bit code before inputting the wep key, this will ensure you have the right number of characters to input
6. Read the instruction manual which comes with the device (not the booklet, one one on the hard drive of the device) - it has a lot more information than the booklet quicki start guide. You can find it by going to the main screen and clicking menu and info
Whats good about it...
lots! - I am writing this review on it while i watch tv with the family.
The dock is great as it links in with your tv and hifi. I can record high definition tv programs on it in Dolby surround sound and then move the recordings onto a network pc and store tons of media for playback at any time and still leaving space onthe archos for more. (The quality of the recording is not so good though... looks like a VHS recording on LP, but I am working on that)
Its great to have the internet in your hand at any time. You can check your email or make purchases while you travel.. its great for anyone with a busy life.
You can record all your CDs onto it (in wav format 48khz), so you dont have to keep getting up to put a new one in when one runs out! You can put your whole photo collection on it and then slide show it on youir plasma TV (this is the future of digital photography for sure... who needs heaps of prints which get creased, dirty and lost when you can have them on your archos and show them in 42 inch plasma size!) - of course you will need the GEN5 dock to do this.
You can copy and delete files from any other computer on your network. You can read new items pdf and text files.
I guess you will have figured i have some extras. I spent about 80 pounds more on internet browser and gen5 dock. They really are required if you want to unleash the full power of the device.
I notice some reviewers have been unlucky and had faults. I must say the support SUCKS. But I am going to hold on to mine. its great!

Had mine since release in the UK. Bought a nice leather case for it and today got the dock. Good resolution for most videos inc rips. Good size disk. Photos a bit pointless on handhelds, much better on PCs although the res is still good. I haven't forked out £30 for the web browser yet as I browse from my PC but I would like to know how good it is if anyone knows. Music is mint with my sennheiser headphones. Plays everything ripped to mp3 and avi files are clean. If your'e sick of ipod, sony and creative get one of these!!!!
My advice get a leather case, makes it a bit bulky but gives you peace of mind in your investment and please archos release a mains charger. Enjoy before the next model comes out.
Broke down in less than a week - 13 Mar 2008

I bought my Archos from a home shopping catalogue (Littlewoods). After waiting over a month for it to arrive I was dead excited to get it. Fully charged it as recommended by Archos before using it and began uploading music and photos on to it and a couple of movies. Listened to it on a journey to London Bridge (50 mins) and then a 10 minute walk to work.
Later that day I tried switching it on, no response. Plugged it into my PC to see if that would do anything, still no response. Reset would not work and Archos' website was not exactly helpful. Contacted Littlewoods to arrange a return and have sent the unit back after paying to put Plug-Ins on to it - Archos refuse to let me carry them over to another unit and will not give me my money back. Am now waiting on a replacement from Littlewoods...Lets hope this one works as I eagerly await another month for it to be despatched from the manufacturers.
Just don't expect miracles - 01 Mar 2008

I have only recently got this player, I bought this to watch movies and tv shows downloaded from my computer. To do this the Archos is superb, the picture quality is excellant, sharp and well defined on the screen which is just about big enough for any movie.
Downloading DVDs can be a bit tricky but i sussed it out quickly enough. To my mind all the extra features are just that - extras to the main event. As such they are excellant and really great.
Don't expect this to be a mini PC - it's not, yes it does some web browsing, you can download movies and other content, and various other bits.
Expect this to be a great movie player first and foremost and you'll not go far wrong, expect this to be something much more, you may not be impressed, for me it ticks all my requirements, marvellous!!!
