I bought the product liking the look of it and the fact that it has WiFi. The touch screen is a joy to use, unfortunately, the rest cannot be said for the rest of the device.
The firmware is terribly unstable. Some WiFi networks it does not see, others it cannot connect to when there is full signal, and others it connects to and crashes when you try to do anything.
Crashing on WiFi is not the only problem. If it encounters a corrupt file, it crashes. If you create a play list and then delete an item off it that it was about to play, it crashes.
Also Archos expect you to spend an extra £10ish to buy a web browser (which would be useless as the WiFi doesn't work). Also you have to buy the facility to make it able to record TV and you have to buy games too.
I contacted Archos' rather pathetic customer service and they said the device was faulty, so I returned it to Amazon, who sent me a replacement. The replacement item incurred the same faults so I have just sent that back too and have not asked for a replacement as I am fed up with it!
The sound quality however is very good, but it does not support continuous play back, which makes listening to albums annoying.
The interface also takes a long time to refresh and is generally very slow and cumbersome.
All in all, my advice is to never buy any product from Archos, as they have poor firmware quality and a customer service that leaves much to be desired.

I was delighted when my Archos 605 WiFi was delivered, but quickly became disappointed. As a player, it is just brilliant. However, although my home network is extensively used by a number of computers- both PCs and MACs, I could not get the Archos to connect and it repeatedly crashed- requiring frequent rebooting. Calling the Archos helpline repeatedly did not help since the line is continuously engaged. Maybe mine was faulty, but it has now been sent back and I would not reconsider a replacement. Just a bit too flaky.

Bought it to listen to music and watch trailers and vids on the train. Excellent, easy to use. Built in Opera browser is a bit ropey and all the plugins are extra but a good buy. I'm hooked and will buy the next generation from Archos when they come out.
Excellent Travel Entertainment / Portable Hard Drive - 06 Feb 2008

I bought this to keep me entertained when I'm travelling. I find the touch screen great to use compared to earlier models without this feature. 30gb is perfectly fine as I use an ipod to play music so it's main use is for films and photos. With the use of the docking station (Optional Extra) I managed to connect my camera and download all the photos I had taken that day. It's excellent to be able to view these straight away without having to wait until I got home.
Downside = Everything for the Archos is an optional extra (all rather expensive), you don't even get a power supply. The Archos arrives with only a USB cable to charge it with from your computer!!
Some films that you download will not play on the Archos so you have to buy the Optional Extra software! The Internet will only work if you buy the Optional Extra internet browser software.
Be warned that the Archos DVR Travel Adapter only records from the TV/DVD it does not allow the Archos to play back to the TV so you may as well buy the full DVR Station.
Apart from the fact that can spend about the same amount of money again on optional extra's its a great product!!

Nice bit of kit, ideal for the travellor as it holds films, music, photo's and you can browse the web in a WiFi area. Recommended to all.
