Archos AV 700 - 26 Mar 2007

I travel 3 hours most days to work in the city and this little toy has been a godsend, with excellent picture quality and quick to transfer from the pc.
However I was dissapointed by the fact that after only 3mths the battery is no longer holding charge.
To add insult the aftersales service by Archos is terrrible when i tried to get it repaired. I would not buy from them again.

Doesn't play video files with AC3 (surround sound) audio codec, hoping that they come out with a firmware to fix that.
Quality of video does look alot better when connected to your TV than on the actual device, depending on the quality of the video you can get a good picture.
Other than that it's qwite nifty,

The Archos AV700 does pretty much everything I wanted. I was slightly worried, having read some reviews, that the screen would be a poor quality. I don't find that this is the case at all. I wanted this player to take on holiday for long coach journeys with my girlfriend so it was important that we could see from all angles and with this screen the picture looks the same from all angles.
I also found it very useful that with the AV700 plugged in to the docking station it is possible to control it entirely using the remote control, which I think is really good and makes life a lot easier compared to my old mp4 player.
From reading reviews I was under the impression that a seperate power lead was not included but this is not the case. The power lead that is plugged in to the docking pad can be plugged directly in to the unit itself so it is not neccessary to take the docking station away with you which is a bonus.
My one problem was with the usb hub. I was hoping that I would be able to plug my 20gb usb laptop hard drive in to the hub whilst on the move and transfer files so that I can utilise the extra memory but the usb hard drive is not recognised; probably because there is not enough power to run both hard drives. I can still use usb sticks to expand the memory so its not a total loss at all.
It is possible to bookmark lots of differnt video files so that you can return to them at a later date without finding your place manually(Think you can have up to about 16 bookmarks)
It doesn't take long to transfer files on to the Archos unless they need converting and I have found very few files that have needed to be converted. All my Avi's run perfectly.
I am definitely pleased with my choice and would recomend it to anyone. I haven't attempted to record anything yet though, so can't really say if its good for that or not.
Archos 700 series - 30 Dec 2006

The 6" wide screen has only 480x234 pixels: the resolution is only just acceptable-certainly not superb.
The TV Freeview version even on a good outside aerial is blocky, freezes, half-blank screen: certainly unwatchable.
The navigation buttons are not intuitive, badly designed and difficult to fathom.
internet and email from a wireless LAN would be better.
The 504 series seems to be a far better bet...
The unit runs very hot-enougfh to fry an egg!
It is heavy, certainly not pocketable.
Even so, a clever gadget, but buy a later model line!!!

Excellent Player - with a few foibles - 19 Aug 2006

Picture Quality:
I've seen people complain about the picture quality - for me it is perfectly good. When recording off tv at 2500 (the maximum) the picture quality is superb. I've been recording at 1000 (second lowest) to save file space and it's a perfectly fine picture. For the tv rips I've transferred on to it the picture quality is just as good as on my PC/TV.
Transferring Files:
This is my only real gripe with the system - I've tried transferring about 50 video files (tv rips that I had on my PC) and despite the fact that they were mpeg4 .avi files only about 15 of them transferred straight over to the player. The good news though is that the player comes with a conversion utility that is extremely simple to use - it takes about 15 minutes per half hour episode to perform the conversion. So far 2 files have failed the conversion (due to a reported error in the file rather than incompatibility) - the documentation does point you to other web sites where you can get more sophisticated conversion tools so possibly they might have been able to cope with these 2 files, I haven't tried.
So the bad side is that you can't guarantee being able to just dump all your files straight on to the player but the good side is that so far it's been able to convert every .avi and .mpeg type of file I've thrown at it so with a bit of extra effort you still end up with the files on your player.
For me this is a bit of a niggle in terms of hassle, but the main thing is that you can get the files across.
Connecting to TV:
Extremely easy to do. Again the only slight niggle is that previously when I turned my tv on it automatically switched to the Sky signal. Now it stays on the aerial feed and I have to hit a couple of buttons on my tv remote to switch to the Sky feed. Just a minor point obviously.
Battery Life:
I played continual video on it and it lasted about 4 1/2 hours. Managed to get another battery for it from ebay for £20 for journeys when I need more than 4 1/2 hours. Haven't tested battery life with music yet.
Buttons:
Again I've seen people say that the buttons aren't very intuitive. Took about 5 minutes to get used to which buttons to press and when, but now there is no problem whatsoever.
Ease of Use:
Some of the screens are a little lacking in functions i.e you can't select multiple files to move from one folder to another. When you copy the video files from your PC to the player they go in the route rather than you being able to move them directly to a specific folder so you then have to move them manually on the player.
Generally the interface is pretty good (and some of the problems may be due to my lack of knowledge of how best to do things at the moment).
Overall:
I've been extremely impressed with this player. Bit disappointed that the video files don't all just copy across but very happy that it seems able to play them all (with conversion). I have the 80Gb version and I would recommend going for that over the 40Gb if you can afford it.
