5 Reviews for Creative Zen Stone 1gb MP3 Player - Blue
Lovely - but almost too small - 07 Mar 2008

The Zen Stone is my first portable mp3 player.
I bought it to replace a portable CD player that I linked to my car cassette player. I'm more concerned with price and functionality than aesthetics. Hence the ipod series was discounted on price. As indeed was the more sensible solution of buying a decent CD player for the car to replace my prehistoric cassette player.
Anyway the Stone duly arrived and is excellent. Small enough to fit into a box of matches and feather-light.
I bought this blue one but it came with a free armband and (black) rubber housing, so the original colour is rather pointless in this case.
The Stone connects to a PC via a short USB cable, supplied. This cable also charges the Stone. Thus you need to be near a PC (or have a separate plug/USB charger - not supplied) to charge it.
At 1Gb it will hold some 20-30 hours of mp3 material. You transfer your files from the PC with drag and drop - indeed you can use the Stone as a 1Gb memory stick.
There's no display screen so you need to memorise what's loaded or take pot luck on playback. I listen to spoken word material, rather than songs, so I preface the files with "01", "02" etc to get the order I want.
Songs (etc) can be put into folders and the toggle control on the side of the Stone allows you to move to the start of the next folder. Useful for categorising songs by album, or style etc.
The other control on the toggle allows you to select random mode, whereby tracks from the whole of the player (not just the folder you're in) are played, you guessed it, randomly.
The front of the player has only the usual controls of on/off/pause, fast forward/next track, fast rewind/previous track and volume up, volume down.
It comes with a pair of earbud headphones which I've found more than adequate for spoken word material. In a quiet room even the lowest volume setting on the Stone is just a little too loud for me.
Finally there's a very small LED on the front that shows battery charge and play (on, off, pause etc) status.
I rarely use it for more than 5 hours without recharging and it registers about half charged at that point. So I'd say that the 10 hour battery life is probably reasonably accurate. I've found the USB charging functionality to be very useful - I just top up the Stone while I'm working.
Amazon gave me a free armband with this and I use it to make the Stone a little larger so that I don't lose it. Perhaps miniaturisation has gone a little far. Luckily I've small fingers, but others might find the controls just a little fiddly.
Not impressed! - 19 Oct 2007

Well, after a lot of deliberation, I settled on a Creative mp3 player - specifically this one. I'd heard a lot of good things about Creative, so was expecting something great.
Out of the box, the player was pretty amazing - small, lightweight, easy to operate without looking at (perfect if it's in your pocket). A single led on the unit told you whether the unit was off, on, paused or playing, as well as the rough battery life (depending on the number of flashes - 1-25%, 26-50%, 51-75%, 76-100%).
The music was notably slow to transfer - for a GB, not nearly as fast as USB2 should be. But this I could live with.
What I discovered, after about a week of occasional use, is that the unit locks up frequently - it won't play once you've turned it on, and will then switch itself off. The first time I got this, I plugged it back into the PC, only to find out it had somehow formatted itself.
Again, I could live with this happening once - I thought it might have been a one time glitch. However, after the 3rd time of this happening within 4 days, I'd had enough and returned it.
Bottom line - Aesthetically pretty pleasing and functional, sound quality reasonable for the price, but stability wise, needs a lot of improvement!
Nice little gizmo - 04 Sep 2007

Incredibly small and compact, a little smaller than the palm of my hand. It was simple to figure out and just as simple to manage the software that is used with it.
It's very loud so I had no problems regarding too low of an output, definately recommended if you want an MP3 player with efficiency without any fuss and hassle.
The only downside that I found was that it didn't come with any clip, keyring attatchment or a lanyard. So it may be wise to purchase one of these seperately in the hopes of not losing it.
Sleek little Stone - 18 Jul 2007

This was purchased as a temporary replacement for my Zen Micro while it's being (hopefully) repaired by Creative and so far so good. It's certainly extremely small and lightweight however I must admit to wondering about its overall build strength and ability to take the occasional knock. Battery life appears better than average (maybe the last reviewer didn't fully charge the player before using it therefore shortening the battery's memory?) and the volume perfectly adequate. I haven't used the supplied earphones since I dislike the inner ear kind and would rather use larger and more expensive headphones. Its controls are certainly simplistic and rather than creating playlists, you merely create folders which the player goes through in turn. There is a shuffle option which I would have liked to somehow randomly play the songs within each individual folder but it appears to shuffle all songs within all folders, meaning you're as likely to get Metallica next to Madonna as you are next to Marilyn Manson!
I only ever choose MP3/WMA format players as you can usually just copy and paste music files into the devices or simply use them purely as removable storage. I've never been too sure why people rave so much over Apple products since I personally think their transfer software is vile to use and the players themselves of only average quality. Thankfully, unlike the two Philips MP3 players I've temporarily had, the Zen Stone has been flawless at connecting to my computer, the Creative Lite software very intuitive to use and it seems to play all music files regardless of which download site they came from.
I'm not entirely sure what I'll do with it once (or if!) my bigger Zen Micro comes back from Creative, whether it'll go back in the box or whether it'll even supersede its bigger brother. Not quite a five star product due to its obvious limitations, but for those looking to take their music on the move without attracting unwelcome attention, it comes highly recommended and at half the price of the iPod shuffle.
A little gem! - 12 Jul 2007

This really is a little gem and is simplicity itself to use. Congratulations to Creative who have managed to produce something that is practical, simple and a triumph of design. There is no vulnerable screen to worry about and, thus, no tedious, confusing menus to wade through. You can simply drag and drop your files without the need for additional software. The buttons are conveniently placed and they are not too small for those of us with larger fingers to manage. Battery life is very good and it conveniently recharges from your USB. Equally importantly, there is plenty of volume and the sound quality is excellent. All this, combined with the fact that it is so neat & light to carry around and at a bargain price, make this a real winner. You would, however, be well advised to buy a case or silicon skin for it; there are no clips or loops on the player itself so you either have to hold on to it or put it in a pocket! A mains charger is also desirable if you aren't always going to be in reach of a computer!
