Perfect first player for kids and technophobes - 11 Feb 2008

How easy is this player! On Christmas day I took it out of the box, plugged it into the computer (it charges itself through the USB), Windows XP recognised it, I dragged some songs onto it. Job done.
No software to download, not even a CD in the box! It also plays licence protected WMA (in other words anything downloaded legally from other than itunes). The Philips PSS I got last year for my other daughter did none of the above.
Well done Creative making such an easy device for such a good price . And it had to be white.

I love the Zen Stone, it's a great little player and much cheaper alternative to the iPod shuffle. You can fit a fair amount of songs on the player - I usually keep four albums and one audio book on mine - and there are two ways in which you can play the songs: shuffle or straight.
The only let down for me is the slightly complicated way in which the music is transferred from the computer to the Zen Stone. If you want the songs play in the correct order you have to make sure to select that you want all filenames to start with '01' then '02'.
Still, I would highly recommend this player to those who want something simple. :)

Being the owner of a Zen Vision:M, rather than an iPod shuffle, I bought one of these for my wife. Great little player!
So small and easy to use and all for a fantastic price.
Will probably upgrade the earphones and also would be great if it came with a mains charger but I guess you can't have everything.
One suggestion to Creative though - how about incorporating a little clip on the back to be able to clip to clothing?...

I bought this for my wife to replace her ancient portable CD player for use on an upcoming air flight. I also have an iPod 30GB and have had two Philips 1GB MP3 (great) and one Samsung 1GB (90 min battery life!) devices. The immediate problem encountered with the Zen Stone was the same as "S&G" reported - complete failure of XP Pro to recognise the mass storage device in Windows Explorer, even though it is found as a disk in Widows device Manager. This must be a problem in some installations as Creative has a chunk of their support website dedicated to device non-recognition (which still fails to solve the problem). Step 2 was to give up installing on my top-end Dell desktop and connect the Zen to a stand-alone Dell laptop (XP Pro) - the device was recognized immediately and less than a minute later I was dragging music files onto the drive. Having now got the device playing, I am very, impressed with the Zen Stone. I have compressed high quality music files into WMA format at 64KB/s that gives me about 400 songs on the device at excellent playback quality. The ability to move between folders of different music genre is extremely useful on a player with no LCD screen. One warning - when switched on it takes up to 8 seconds before the files start to play- it is tempting to think that the sound is turned down low so you start to press the volume button up....then the music kicks in and, boy, is it loud! So in summary, this is a great device and if you are one of the majority where your PC recognizes it you will be more than happy. If you are one of the ones where Windows just will not find the device then give up, keep the packaging, and pass it on to someone else at Christmas......

I bought my zen stone as a small carry arround mp3 i already have a 6gig zen and like the product . I was very impressed with the stone its small easy to use and has a great soud quality . My only gripe is the earphone i wish they would supply the in ear type not the buds as they tend to hurt my ears but maybe thats just me . Don't know why people rave about i pods the creative mps are great for the price and as are in my opinion better than i pods .
