Black Credit Card!! - 20 Mar 2008

To be precise if you want to see yourself how it would look, You would have to pile up 10 to 12 credit cards. I'm just lucky that Amazon sold this for £119.99 last week. This 16 Gig player is just amazing. Wow, the sound quality just amazing. I wouldn't say it is a perfect finish. Creative is just clever enough in not spending too much money on the looks. The black finish is just enough. The cost cutting is a good move and additional features for a little bit quid is cool. Although the earphones suplied with the player is mediocre, I would recomend a sound isolating earphones for this player. Go for either shure se210 or a Sennheiser CX500, they both are perfect for Zen. The most coolest part in this player is, it has option to set your wallpapers. It would be your background through out any menu. The video clarity is perfect. Amazon is selling now for £132 it is still worth to pay £132 for this. I haven't used Creative software, it ain't user friendly. But windows mediaplayer can synchronise with no problem. Very simple to use, just connected it worked perfect. Creative has done a creative work here.

An expensive Paperweight - 10 Mar 2008

Oh the hours I spent, trying to get this thing to work! First, the software repeatedly failed to install without errors. Then, the actual player failed to show up as a device. Finally, the unit went completely dead. This is the second (and last) time I have bought a Creative product and the second (and last) time I have been let down badly by a complete failure to operate.

No wonder people buy iPods.

Back for a refund. - 07 Mar 2008

I'm sending this back for a refund. The player repeatedly shuts down and refuses to respond until reset with a paperclip in the little hole. I have found this especially after the keypad lock is engaged. A reformat and reinstallation of the firmware did not solve the problem.

When it has worked I have found the sound and video quality to be good. The bundled software is disappointing as it only gives you the option of encoding to WMA (not MP3).

But the frustration of having to reset the player several times a day is just too much. Have a look at the reviews for the 8Gb version for more 1 star ratings, and also have a look at the forums on the Creative website for more poor unfortunates tearing their hair out over this player.

Nice little unit - 04 Mar 2008

I've had the Zen for a couple of months now, long enough to give it a good road test. I'd been happy with my Nomad for a few years but thought it was time to move away from hard drives and when the new Zen came along it seemed to fit the bill. I haven't been disappointed.

Some of the recurring criticisms in other reviews seem to me a little unfair. First, the concerns about the quality of the earphones. Only a mug uses the earphones supplied with any decent player. To do justice to the player you need to spend a few bob on earphones: it's quite understandable that player manufacturers don't want to make a substantial hike in selling price by bundling quality earphones.

Second, the comment about the supplied USB cable being short. The player uses a standard USB linkage, so anyone with a computer has probably already got a collection of suitable cables. The short cable is actually quite dinky for carrying around in your bag and forgetting.

Third, that the player doesn't come with a charger. One of the great advantages to me of the Zen over my old Nomad is precisely that it doesn't need a charger. Most of us these days have a computer somewhere near us for some part of the day, and mine won't be the only one with a USB cable always hanging out ready to be attached to whatever accessory is needed.

Sound quality is good. I find it noticeably better than my wife's ipod equivalent. I did find the volume levels lower than I was used to, but when I used a new set of earphones (Shure 210s, highly recommended) I found that level 20 (out of 25) was quite adequate for use in the gym.

I hadn't expected to use it much for pictures or video, but having tried it out and been impressed with the crispness of the image and the unexpected watchability of such a small screen I find I'm using video increasingly frequently.

No particular problem areas. The reviews suggest that the odd duff player is floating about, but assuming you don't get lumbered with one of those this is a unit which should satisfy the needs of anyone looking for a small high-spec player. Four stars is probably on the conservative side; four and a half may be fairer.

The perfect middle ground between nano size and larger capacity - 25 Feb 2008

I've had my Zen just over a month now, and I'm in love with the thing. It's my pride and joy, and a much better machine than the Zen Vision: M which I bought it to replace. Indeed, with the Zen I frequently feel like I've stumbled onto a great secret that the ipod generation have overlooked.

In terms of browsing and usability, the Zen's d-pad beats the clicking scroll bar of the Zen Vision: M hand-down. It's also great value for the capacity and potential. Indeed, with an mp3 player, you're usually forced go for either capacity or the novelty of a smaller physical size. This presents a great half way point between the two.

The Zen offers a 16gb player for around the same price as an 8GB Nano (I paid £129.99), and is further expandable via the SD card slot, which I've filled with a £17.99 8gb SD HC Memory Card. That makes it a nano-sized 24gb player for under £150.

Add a stylish-looking protective case (£15 - with nifty magnetic fastening) and a further two 8gb SD HC SD cards which sit snugly in the SD card slits in the case - plus a travel power adaptor (£10 - especially handy if you're planning on taking the Zen travelling) and a screen protector (£5)... and you've suddenly got a compact, 40gb pocket-sized player with tons of accessories, for over £100 less than a 32gb ipod touch - a sum total of around £215.

The combination of screen protector and additional SD cards are valuable for a machine with such potent videoplaying capacity. Supporting the majority of formats and complete with a video converter for unsupported file types, the Zen delivers around 4 hours of video playtime.

Consider also the dictaphone function (ideal for me - I'm a journalist), outlook synchronisation (great for any office worker), photo slideshows and FM Radio, and this is a comprehensive and complete media machine.

Indeed, I'd say the Zen is a perfect middle ground between price, physical size, capacity and features. The Creative Zen Media Player software is also pretty nifty, with the only real drawback being that it doesn't offer a way to add album art to track metadata (I use Media Player for this instead).

There's also a 32gb version on the way soon, so those looking for an even higher capacity will be pleased - they'll be able to carry around up to 56gb of files with all of the add-ons mentioned above.
