Frustratingly Good / Bad !!!!!! - 23 Mar 2008

I may be being a tad unfair on Creative, it might just be me, but I find this device a real bugger to put videos onto. My partner bought one primarily to watch videos on, a PSP was too big for her needs and this seemed to be perfect. Adding CD's is fine and the sound quality is great, but MP4's are another matter altogether. I have a Sony NWZ-s618 and when I convert a DVD (using DVD decrypter and Videora software) I can just drag and drop the file straight onto the Sony in about a minute or so, depending on the length of the video, mainly films). To convert the DVD takes about 10 minutes on the Decrypter and then to convert the film, roughly about the same time as it would take to play it(i.e.a 90 minute film takes about 90 mins!). However, when I try to add to the Creative, even though it supposedly takes MP4 files, it always says the file is too big or format unrecognised and I then have to convert through the Creative software. As I write this I am converting an Eels live DVD from the 'Live in London' CD/DVD pack which is 90 mins long, it has now been converting for 2 hrs 15 mins and is only at 76% !!!!!!!!!!!(not all have taken this long to be fair) It does also have a habit of freezing on the video screen when I load a video it doesn't like...I generally have to reboot to get it unstuck !

It is only in the last week that I have actually been able to convert all files as well, previously it would just reject some when I tried to convert them and would close the software down. I have in the last week downloaded a patch from the Creative site which seems to have sorted this.
Even when I have sat for hours converting it's not always a success. I converted Peter Gabriels 'Growing Up Live' DVD the other week and tried to load onto the Creative. First it said it did not recognise the file (this was after conversion) then a few seconds later it started playing but was very jittery, perhaps at 2.5 hours it was too long, but I had 17.6GB of drive space left and it loaded up onto my 8GB Sony in about a minute and plays perfectly. My partner has now also bought the newer version of the Sony with a slightly larger screen, but we are both exasperated at trying to get videos on the Zen.

I have given three stars as the MP3's are fine and when videos do load up the quality and sound are great and were it not for this problem it would get 5 stars. By the way, if anyone can tell me where I'm going wrong I would be eternally greatful! (Up to 79% now...6 minutes later !)

Good product, shame about the after care - 18 Feb 2008

I purchased a Creative Zen Vision 60GB after reading reviews and speaking to various people about the Ipod 80GB and the above 60GB. I decided that Creative have an excellent reputation with sound cards therefore, their MP3 player should be in the same league.
Firstly, i like good bass and did not get that from the Creative product. I was fortunate to compare it against my wife's Ipod Nano. For me, Creative lost right there, however, I preferred dragging MP3 files as opposed to creating ACC ones so I compromised. Sound Vs Drag and Drop.

I was content with the Zen until 2 months later, it froze. The music still played but no vision was had. My troubles then began. The vision returned after giving the product another 24 hour charge.

I was able to get another 4 months use after that before the product went completly dead. In total, I had the product for 6 months before having to send it back to the manufacturers.

Luckily I sent it Special Delivery as when I made contact with Creative, they claimed not having received it. I was able to offer them a tracking number. I then received an email saying that they cannot repair it and would I accept an alternative product as the 60GB was out of stock. I agreed to this and was offered the Creative Zen W 30GB.

After many emails and about a month later, I received a second hand Creative 60GB that had been scratched, well worn and at least over a year old. I questioned why they sent such a used product along with the fact they were sending a Zen W as a replacement product.
Numerous emails later, I was told to return the product which I did reluctantly as to what had happened with my last one. Lo and behold, the same thing happened as they claimed not receiving my product. Again a tracking number was sent.

I originally sent my product to them in September 2007 after purchasing it in March 2007. We are now approaching March 2008 and I have not received my replacement product as when they sent one with UPS in Janurary, it got lost.
Personally, I will not be touching another Creative product as the organisation has gone down in my estimation. I am utterly disgusted by the whole episode and wanted to share my experience with those wishing to purchase a Creative product. Beware of the Aftercare.

Apologies for the long review but I hope it was helpful.

HELP! - 31 Jan 2008

does anyone else find that their zen either reacts really slowly, or completely freezes? used to love this, now i'm not so sure :(

Can't find anything better - 19 Jan 2008

I've had one of these for over 2 years now. I can't praise enough this little gadget, it does everything it's supposed to do and it does it well, outperforming a similar Ipod which I came in contact with very recently: excellent sound, good battery life, handles many audio and video formats and like no Ipod it has a radio tuner AND you can record the broadcasts. I believe it's being discontinued, just bought another for a friend, so get hold of one before it disappears from the market.

I pod fan converted.. - 11 Jan 2008

I have owned an Ipod Video (generation 5) for over a year. Recently the drive on the player died. I tried getting it fixed via the helpline but to no avail and the cost of a full repair was as much as a new player. So I hit the shops and started looking for a replacement. Had I not had the issues with the Ipod help team I probably would have returned to them...

Thanks goodness I didn't!

With Windows = Microsoft = Creative having such a huge hold of the market they are bound to have a player that is customer friendly. But this goes beyond that. The Ipod relies on Itunes which, although reasy to use, drove me mad eventually because every time I opened the software it would need another update, and so would the Ipod. If you don't do both they don't speak to each other! The formats used by the pod means you need to convert everything. Not a problem you would think but if you are to take on the giant that is Microsoft you have to do one better and apple is not there yet with the Ipod.

The Zen has more functions, it can handle a far wider variety of file types and, more importantly to me, can manage itself. You can delete files on the player without the need to plug it in and do everything through the specific software. The player is also far better, I have the same size of drive with the M as I had with the Ipod (30G) and the zen is much quicker. The screen is far better and so are the controls, the scroll wheel on the pod is a very good idea but can be hard to control and any covers for it result in it not responding. The Zen player can also partition its drive to allow it to be used as an external HD which is fantastic. The Ipod does the same but doing it makes the player unstable with windows and results in it eventually crashing and needing to be reloaded.

I only have the Pod to compare this in terms of mp3 / media players but I am very impressed with the Zen M. I can understand the comments on the price but there are deals out there and it really is worth the extra. I would also argue that those reviews which deem the Ipod better. I am a big fan of apple and I see them as leaders in this technology but there is more to it than coming up with new ideas. The Zen has all the Ipod has and so much more.
