5 Reviews for iRiver Clix 2 8GB MP3 Player
Awesome bit of kit - 13 Mar 2008

I've only had it a couple of days but it's so good I decided to write my first Amazon review.
The menu system is really easy to use - once you realise you can press and hold the right side to access the deeper menus. The screen is beautifully colourful and detailed and videos look great.
Drag and drop of pictures/music/videos files using the USB is simplicity itself as you just drop them into the Pictures/Music/Videos directory on the Clix and you don't have to install any software to be able to use it. I have not been able to convert videos taken with my Canon Ixus camera yet using either of the provided converters but there are other 3rd party converters that claim to support iRivers. Other AVIs and WMVs have worked fine.
Sound through the included headphones is good but a bit tinny as highlighted by an earlier reviewer but I have yet to try it with a decent pair because I lost my last Sony in-ear phones with my previous MP3 player.
Delightful but not ideal for docking in the kitchen - 08 Mar 2008

We've been trying to win back surface space in our house. Part of our plan was to rip all of our CDs and get them onto MP3 or equivalent. In the event, we went with Windows Media Player formats, because that works nicely on our PCs and the file size of the Microsoft format (WMF) was better than MP3, though it isn't as portable as MP3.
You won't catch me often with headphones on, but I was drawn to the idea of an iPod-ish MP3 player, because I'd seen other people's kitchens, where they docked their iPod with a small set of speakers and used less surface space then our trusty old radio/cassette/CD player, which is vying for position with various kitchen appliances. Getting a portable WMF player, which spends most of its time in the kitchen, seemed like a smart move - especially if you can load a ton of songs on it.
Going the WMF route made iPods less attractive - you can do it, but it is messy - so we focused on alternatives that support WMF and the iRiver Clix2 8GB looked to be head and shoulders above the rest of the flash players. 8GB is a lot of space for songs and flash means no moving parts means less to go wrong, better battery life and - oh yes - skip free (I don't really use it with headphones much). It is delightfully small and uses all available space very cleverly and intuitively. You are essentially handling a very clear display with click-able edges.
There are some glitches in the software. I was disappointed that album covers didn't copy across when I sync-ed with Windows Media Player, but I understand that they should have done. Also setting up presets in the radio is clumsy (we tend to leave it tuned to one station though). However, you can upgrade the firmware over the Internet, using the iRiver software; it is dead easy and your Clix 2 gets a bit better every time the firmware is upgraded. So if there are things which are less than ideal for you, you will find that they quite likely get fixed over time.
I have only one grumble, though, and that's the messiness of my docking set-up. The Clix 2 has its USB on one edge and its headphone socket on another. So you recharge the device on one side and get music out of it on the other. That sets a challenge for a docking station design, which needs to connect to both edges. I went with an iSound for docking + recharging. The speaker quality is nice enough for the kitchen and a fair price at £20 from Amazon. The Clix 2 is mounted by its headphone jack (you get a male-to-male adaptor that acts as a plinth) and you change the display orientation of the Clix 2 from landscape to portrait (easily done) and it looks elegant with a nice small footprint. But you are not recharging.
To recharge you need to get a USB connected into its top edge. The iSound gives you a USB socket, but you have a messy wire looping round into the top when you are recharging. That USB lead is yet another thing to find a home in the kitchen. In an ideal world there would have been some need little DC jack beside the headphone jack and it would be able to recharge via the plinth. Happily its battery life is very good so you don't need to faff around with the USB too much.
Overall, I am delighted with this device. It is a great bit of kit.
Utterly useless customer service and bad quality control - 05 Mar 2008

I bought a new clix2 8gb which was not working on its first charge. The only way to get a replacement under warranty was to ship the faulty device to Germany for repair. Having done this I was told that I would have to pay a further £40 to have the player repaired (under warranty?). Despite emailing them several times, they are not responding at all to my questions asking what the fault is, & why they cannot find the invoice that was included in the package I sent.
Terrible experience - DO NOT BOTHER!!!
thinking about an iPod Nano? Think again! - 20 Jan 2008

The iRiver Clix2 is a great little product. Forget your iPod nano and other clones, this device has much better sound and picture quality, and you can just drag and drop your MP3s (WMA, OGG and others) without the need of hateful software. You will have to convert your videos, but the bundled software is easy to use.
The device is not without its little faults. Personally I don't like the buttons as part of the case. You constantly need to put the lock feature on - otherwise you could end up formatting the device if you're not careful! I've seen a few people complain about the battery life and that the 3D sound is better on previous models, but I've had no such problems.
I've used and owned many portable media devices but this is by far the most practical, petite & feature rich device, that's fairly inexpensive. Go for the 8Gb version - otherwise you'll regret it.
Remember IFP799? - 31 Dec 2007

I am so disappointed! I was expecting better or at least the same sound quality. Unfortulately it is not so good. I have good old Iriver IFP799 and 3D sound is so much more 3D... Why? Why couldn't they implement the same technology to Clix2? It would be so great player...
