I have an iriver H10 20 GB. Its handy fits in your hand, though it is a bit chunky. It looks cool (without the protective cover). Its sensitive scroll button is more user friendly than the iPod's but can be at times extremely sensitive (and frustrating).
It works well. It has more superior sound quality than most mp3 players including the iPod video. It also has 30 different presets, custom EQ settings and SRS WOW. It plays wma, mp3, and many encrypted files of many internet shops including Napster, MSN Music and Audible.co.uk.
It has a crystal clear LCD display (thankfully it doesn't scratch as easily as the iPod's). Though the screen is small it's brilliant. Photos can be viewed on it. Some photos without the right resolution do look quite bad on it (it has a resolution of 128 x 128 pixels). It also takes a bit of time to load large picture files so I do recommend reducing the resolution with software such as Office Picture Manager.
It is very slow while synching with Windows Explorer but is extremely quick with Windows Media Player (it also works with the beta version). It can hold text files and work as a UMS if you paste the files in the data folder.
It plays fm radio on it which I think is very handy. It also records radio as an mp3 file. It also works as a dictator phone and can record up to 350 hours.
The battery works for about 11 hours on average. The problem about songs ordered in alphabetical order than album order can be solved by the firmware downloadable on www.iriver.com. (I hope they bring out a video firmware just as they did for the H300.)
It has frozen on me four times in the last five months (you can reset it by using the reset pinhole at the top). I found it stops freezing when you remove it properly from the PC (that is closing WMP and waiting till "OK to Disconnect" appears on the screen).
Finally I find that it is fun to use, can store all my music, sounds great and is great value for money. I hardly can find fault with the device now, it's just great.
Great great all rounder - 08 Jun 2006

The iRiver is the possibly the best mp3 player i have seen/used/heard of at that price. IT's 20G capicity is plenty and anyone claiming it's enough is simply lying. The Battery life is great the sound quality is great even with the poor qualty phones provided. The screen is ok but lets be honest how many realistically use the photo viewer. The controls take some time to get used to especially if u have been using a sony-erricsson phone as the select button is the opposite side. I would imangine it much easier to use if you are left handed as the play/skip buttons are on the right hand side. The navigation of the player is great with everything easy to reach in a short time. Once you get used to everything you can esily get to everything you need. The vertical bar is a little hard to activate due to the fact it is so deep and even harder with the case (see below). The radio is great although i havn't used it that much ive never had a dodgy singnal. The interface is easy ASLONG AS YOU HAVE XP. You can not use it otherwise. YOu do not any drivers etc.l aslong as ur on xp.Transfer is alittle slow but this is the same on all mp3 players on the wmp sync. Although i do not USB 2.0 so it may be different. BUt to put around 1300 songs it took 3 hours.(no typo 3 hours) You can not charge the MP3 without the usb charger. This is a bit of a hassle but considering the battery you shouldn't need it that much. And 20 Gb comes at a size. The player is bulky but looks robust. YOu also get a rubber case which ok but adds to the size and doesn't protect the main fragile pieces: the screen, Control pad.

Still loving it.... - 24 May 2006

I have had my H10 for nearly a year now and I am still crazy about it. I also purchased the docking station and a spare battery, definitely a good investment. I have found the H10 to be stylish, efficient, easy to use, reliable, sturdy, fun... I could go on.
Wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone.
A good buy - simple, effective, inexpensive - 30 Apr 2006

I bought this a couple of weeks ago due to the fact that the commute to work is extremely boring and long, and also because my collegues recommended it. My closest friend has a 6GB version of the H10, and has had some problems with it in the past and another has the 5GB version and has had no problems with it - I was dubious about a purchase.
Let's start off with a basic overall view:
Sound Quality - 10/10
The sound is pure genius. The headphones provided, Sennheiser, are of extremely good quality and are more durable than the headphones Apple provides with the iPod. With SRS WOW options and countless EQ settings, you can adjust the sound to suit your needs. The volume varies from very quiet to very loud, although not too damaging for your ears. I find that usually the volume control is on 24 (out of a possible 40), which allows me to clearly hear the music/radio and also people speaking to me if needed.
Storage Capacity - 10/10
So far, i've used up around 2GB of the 20GB space, and i have well over 500 songs on there. The capacity of 8,000 songs is excellent and well beyond the reach of someone like myself. The added bonus of being able to store recordings from the radio and over 300 hours of voice is impressive. There is a slight drawback which is you cannot directly delete files from the H10 without upgrading the firmware.
Battery life - 8/10
The battery life has been great to me so far, and I've charged it twice in the four weeks I've had it (and i listen to it for about 1-2 hours a day). The charging is very quick - about 2 hours and the battery is fully charged for me.
Reliability - 8/10
The iRiver has the omnimous glow of the classic system freeze surrounding it, and I myself have had my iRiver freeze on me twice so far. Fortunately, there is a RESET pin-hole at the top of the iRiver, and as far as I'm aware of this is not present on the two other versions (however I could be wrong). Inserting a pin into this hole restarts the system and unfreezes it.
Extra Features - 10/10
The bonus of having a radio, voice recorder, photo viewer and text viewer is EXCELLENT. The quality of recording is up to par with most professional voice dictation machines. The radio can store up to 20 different preset stations and has great reception without the need of a long annoying aerial. The large, bright and colourful screen is excellent and you can see pictures much more clearer than the iPod does. The text viewer is extremely useful for me - if i need to remember an important fact for later in the day, i can write a text file on my PC and transfer it to the iRiver and read it later! A genius design feature. Other features include an alarm, a clock, shuffle and repeat modes, power off and sleep timers, music fade in, playlists and countless others.
Overall - 9.5/10
This is definitely a good buy if you want an excellent alternative to the iPod. The scroll system rivals the wheel system of the iPod with a great vengence - I find it much easier to find a song/artist with the scroll bar instead of the wheel. The only drawback with getting the 20GB H10 over the 5/6GB version is the size of the actual player itself. The 20GB H10 is larger in width/weight/length than the 5/6GB version and can appear bulky. However, the bright screen makes up for this as the 6GB version screen is extremely small compared to this.
If you're in the same position as i was, then think about it logically. If you want a very good alternative to the iPod then seriously consider the 20GB H10 iRiver. It definitely needs to be tested to appreciate the full glory of it.
