the worst mp3 ever made - 25 Aug 2007

i have to say that i have had mine for two years now and i am thoroughly unimpressed. i had to reset it at least once a week (which meant carrying a needle with me where ever i went!!!) if you are looking for a new mp3 i would definetly go and buy another type.

after about 16months it broke down and was useless since as the screen did not work.

did you know it is impossible to delete anything on the device unless it is plugged into a computer?

Iriver H10 Beats Ipod Any Day - 12 Apr 2007

I'm proud of my Iriver H10. It BEATS THE PANTS off similar capacity ipods/ sony/ creative mp3 players!*
I've owned it for almost 10 months now. A lot of people post premature reviews, and with mp3 players this isn't ideal as a relatively high % of them will go wrong sooner rather than later (including makes such as Ipod and Creative!).

This is one of the main reasons I choose the Iriver - it comes with a 2yr warranty. This clearly shows Iriver have some confidence in the quality of their product, and 10 months in my player has seen a lot of use (and some misuse) and is still functioning perfectly.

I've heard some negative remarks about the interface on the Iriver. Poppycock! The touchpad is lovely, and navigating around is intuitive and simple. The controls are pretty well located for changing tracks or volume by feel alone.

* "How is this better than an Ipod nano 8gb?" I hear you ask, foolishly. Well, even ignoring the obvious price difference, the Iriver has more features, an extended warranty, and it can be UMS!!

In fact the Iriver can be UMS (universal media storage) or MTP (media transfer protocol), by switching the firmware. Now this is admittedly not an easy thing to do, however all the help you need is available at www.misticriver.net , and after a bit of playing around it's well worth the effort. Most importantly, when the player is UMS it will be recognised as an external hard drive when you plug it into a computer. You can then drag and drop your music and any other files you choose onto the player!
Alternatively, you can stick with the default setup and use a program like windows media player to transfer your music collection for you.

There are a few niggles here and there: Main problem is battery life - between 6-9hrs is pretty poor, but then charging is quick (also comes with ac adapter). The quicklist feature is useless, and after a few days the H10 `forgets' and takes a while to boot up. But these are unimportant. Besides, it even comes with a brilliant protective case with belt clip (which u would otherwise have to pay for)!

I paid £120 for mine, and even today that's still a fair asking price. At the price these are going second hand it's practically a no-brainer, particularly if you want a UMS player.

As MP3's are now becoming as commonplace as mobile phones, people are going to be searching around for £100 bargains. I very much regret parting with £90 with this.

I ordered this with Amazon in September 2006. Within three weeks the sound had "blown", ie a horrible screeching sound like a needle scratching through a record. Amazon were very good at sending me a replacement. However the second player was even more frustrating. You download all your albums on to it and within a week, it freezes. You switch off the player, and all the music is gone. So you can either delete all data and start again (takes about 90 minutes of patience) or you can "refresh" it, where all the tracklisting is back to front and lots of the tracks appear as "Unknown Artist" and are separated from others on the same album.

I did persevere with this, however this week the player is now missing vital components so I cannot access the main menu, the radio, music, anything. And yes, I-River do have a detailed support page on their website when this happens, but the USB cable does not work - so you can't run the "repair program" on their website.

You're better off spending a bit more money and going with a tried and trusted company. I won't be buying an I-River product again.

Durable and will become a friend - 19 Jan 2007

I've had mine for over a year now and it's an old friend. It lives in my briefcase and has had quite a hard life but continues to give excellent performance. The radio quality is excellent, and it does not have built in redundancy because you can replace the battery - not that I have needed to.

My only critisism is that it sometimes takes a little while to boot up - but I still say that it is one of the best electrical devices I have ever bought. Buy it.
