i received this mp3 player for my 15 birthday to take out to south africa so i had music with me.After a WEEK out there it stopped working left it on charge and it worked again, ive had it about three years now and i have had enough, when it does work it has a decent volume although recognises very little song information. It's pretty easy to get around though when it works.Battery life is pretty bad too a few hours at best.I am now off to find something decent that does not BREAK all the time.Oh yeah the headphones supplied are not great either they broke too, funnily enough the warranty is up so i've left it on charge constantly which normally fixes it for a while but this time i think it's really died.DO NOT BUY THIS IT IS NOT WORTH THE HASSLE!

Nothing but trouble - 23 Dec 2006

I've had this for a year and all I've had is problems and issues.

First thing was that all it would do is play two seconds of a song and skip to the next one (this was nothing to do with the settings) after about 30 seconds, it just flicked through the whole playlist flashing up the names for a second each and moving onto the next.

Then it would not turn on, tried charging it overnight and still nothing. Through my frustration i dropped it and that seemed to get it working!!

Now it's just not doing anything, this has been a complete waste of £[...] and I'm off to buy an iRiver.....DO NOT TOUCH THIS WITH A BARGE POLE, IT WILL ONLY LEAVE YOU DISSAPOINTED.

decent player - 07 Nov 2006

i've had this nearly 2 years and i hav'nt experienced any of the problems that people have mentioned here.i use it daily and i totally erase the contents and add tracks all the time-by this i mean that i use it and abuse it on a regular basis.i've dropped it while riding my bike 3 times which has created a small crack on the casing but it works with no problems.you need to get onto the phillips website and download the updates-these seem to keep the player working well.i've only ever had 1 problem and i contacted phillips customer services and they helped me out without any nonsense.i think its a decent player-its been fine for me for 2 years now and its still going strong.get one.
ps-i wrote this review about 6 months ago and since then the battery has completely died on me-fair enough,i used it loads.however,i rang philips repair centre and was told it would cost £90 to repair it-£30 of which is the transport cost!(to manchester-i live 16 miles away!!)considering the player cost around a £100,what they are telling me is that it makes more sense to replace it-i'm raging!i don't believe in this type of waste,it annoys the hell out of me.just thought i'd let you know.i'd take a star off my review if i could.

Not terrible but wouldn't recommend - 14 Aug 2006

I've had this player for about 3 years now and it's still going all beit a bit dodgy. I'm happy with this player but you can get better for the money.
Pros:
Looks pretty cool, pretty small, isn't white, pretty good screen size, firmware upgradeable, plays .wma although most of them do now anyway, Musicmatch software is quite good, easy to use (anyone that disputes that is probably a bit thick)Good sound quality and good headphones
Cons
Sometimes doesn't charge fully, you have to take the cable out and put it back in to finish the charge. Headphones have finally broken but that is fairly common. Takes ages to add music, some laptops don't seem to recognise it as a memory device which is a bit irritating.

Philips customer serivice is awful and just plain crap. - 07 Feb 2006

I bought this 1 year ago and only had it for 1 month and to cut a long short it broke then i had to get it repaired then it broke again. then comets gave me a creative zen which is even worse becasue the headphone jack broke. Then i bought a iriver h10 witch is a babe. It is perfect. DONT BUY A PHILIPS MP3 PLAYER BECAUSE IT JUST WONT WORK. Buy a iriver, sony, ipod nano, or anything that just isnt creative or philips.
