HDD6320 Looks good, but beware... - 26 Mar 2008

Adv.: Looks good, big storage, cheaper than IPod.
Dis: Very poor durability, often freezes, seems there are some faults and support is awful.
I'm so disappointed with my Philips Gogear HD6320 that I felt compelled to write a review and warn people to not buy it...
I purchased my GoGear from a seller on Ebay shortly after Christmas 2006. The seller was a perfectly honest gent, who not only supplied the MP3 player still in the cellophane wrapping, but also supplied the receipt with it in case I needed to return it at any stage.
The first thing I noticed was how slick it looked and how nice it was to navigate. The only thing about it's appearance that I don't like is the power switch, which seems cheap for such an otherwise expensive looking machine.
The second thing was, it was slow to transfer files... but that was fine. I could wait.
The earphones provided, though a little flimsy, weren't too bad and so I stuck with them (having spent a lot on the MP3 player I couldn't afford to buy a really nice set of earbuds). The sound was fine and, though I experienced the MP3 player freezing sometimes, it was always easily rectified and never too much hassle.
Towards Christmas 2007 (Having had the player for nearly 12 months) the earphones began to lose the sound in the right ear. Thinking nothing of it, I asked for new earphones from my better half for Christmas and waited eagerly to use them.
When I plugged them in the right ear still didn't work. I tried another set, they still didn't work. Because the manufacturers guarentee was now up (12 months after the original purchase) I e-mailed Philips for some advise.
They were less than helpful stating that a repair would cost nearly as much as I actually paid for the MP3 player.
A couple of weeks later the sound began to randomly work again and did so up until last weekend. The new earphones were expensive and the sound was so much better through them. However, a week ago the sound dropped in and out again and eventually stopped coming through (in the right) altogether.
I was obviously unhappy and tried my earphones in my friends MP3 player... the right earphone still wasn't working, which made no sense. I plugged his earphones into my player and still no sound through the right earpiece. Now both the player and the earphones weren't working.
I purchased another set of expensive earphones but unfortuantely, there is still no sound through the right earphone on the MP3 player, but the earphones work in everything else. This leads me to believe that something in player is faulty and is also blowing the right earphone as well. I won't risk putting the earphones back in the MP3 player incase they blow again...
I now can't use the MP3 player and will be saving up for an IPOD.
I wouldn't recomend it.
Philips Support - 27 Feb 2008

Lost the usb/mains adaptor. Contacted Philips and after two months received a letter advising that they no longer make this particular adaptor/lead. Player bought 18 months ago, not used for the last 12. Shocking product support. Be warned.
Why is it so expensive tho? It's rubbish - 13 Feb 2008

I got this for about £80 - not bad for 30GB i thought after an Ipod that I had corrupted..
Even after downloading my music collection (4500 songs) 3 times in the first week I persevered.. then after constantly having trouble updating/creating playlists that vanish etc... fast forward 10 months & it has now bricked itself and is not recognised by the PC. Can't do anything with it & couldn't do very much when it was working.
Love It- Hate It - 30 Jan 2008

I have had a love hate relationship with this player ever since I bought 2 by mistake from Amazon a couple of years ago. It has chic look, good sound, the original ear-phones are ok (get better ones, will hear the difference straight away), But the touch-screen controls at times are very annoying, the player is pretty fragile (My back-up has had it's screen cracked for a few months now, still works but can't see anything of note now.) And originally both units didn't support any picture format and refused to load any I had at all (Even tho it says on the box it is a photo-music player and fully supports Jpegs and the like.) It plays music fine generally, and it has a useful feature to player fav tunes on a playlist. Unfortunately, I have lost confidence in it now and have decided to buy a Creative 30gb. It would have caused me less stress to get that and use it I'm sure, but maybe not as striking looking or fustrating. RIP Philips 6230, annoyed the hell out of me at times, but you will be sadly missed. :'-(
Good MP3 player when it works but no support - 16 Jan 2008

I have had my HDD 6320 for over a year now and still can't decide If I am happy with it or not. Looking at some of the other reviews on this site people seem to either love it or hate it. I'm somewhere it the middle.
On the plus side it is a beautiful gadget to hold and use, the menus are easy to navigate and down-loading music from windows media player 10 (9 and 11 are not supported)iss easy (most of the time). The built in microphone is also a nice feature. As a basic MP3 player that can hold thousands of songs and show pictures it does the job.
But now onto the problems. For me, most of these are niggles but they are the things that have caused some reviewers to give such a low score. It does hang up quite often but this can be easily remidied with a soft reset. The biggest problem comes with the go gear loosing files. It does not so much lose the files as forget where they are. Occasionally (commonly after a soft reset) it will forget that there is anything on the hard drive. If you look at the drive on a computer you can see that the data is there but the go gear's data-base does not register it. The only way to remedy this is to wipe the player and start again (which can be quite a lengthy process if you happen to have thousands of tracks). This is a firmware problem and hpoefully should be fixed soon (of corse the player will need to be wiped to install it...). The player is incompatable with windows media player 11 so only WMP10 can be used. Also don't get too excited by the FM reciver. It does not work in Europe.
The other problem I have with the player is the attitude from phillips. The USB connection on the player is non-standard so only Go gear specific periferals can be used. Of these there are about 4! Phillips produces hundreds of periferals for I-pods but they do not even produce a usb sync cable for there own rival player! If you hapen to lose/ brake your charger/ sync cable (they're joined as one unit) the only way to replace it is to buy a dock (or get lucky on e-bay).
Sorry this review has gone on a bit but I wanted to give a clear overview of what you get when you buy a phillips go gear. Over all I would say that the go gear is an MP3 player that will do it's job but if you get one expect the occasional wipe and reload and don't expect any help from phillips. Finally, would I recomend that you buy a phillips go gear? I would probably say no, based purely on the lack of available periferals.
