Do not buy - not compatible with Windows Media player - 06 Jan 2008

Last year my son bought himself a Sandisk m240 MP3 player, now retailing on Amazon for £9.99. Transferring music was easy. Windows Media Player recognised his Sandisk without any need to install software and Synchronised any music dragged into the appropriate area. Playback was equally easy as the device as music could be selected by artist, album, song title, genre etc.

My youngest son wanted an MP3 player for his birthday today and wanted a different device. The Philips players have been well reviewed in the past and looked nice enough, with the additional benefit of an FM radio. All went well at first. WM player recognised the player, I synced 400 MB of music and then pressed Play. I then realised that there was no way to search for music on the device - with 2 GB of storage, there could be hundreds of songs to look through. I went to the website FAQs and found that this player "does not support subfolders". Windows Media Player creates subfolders for each album, by artist, allowing easy search by compatible devices. This device is not compatible. The Philips website then advises you to "use software such as...Windows media player" and "copy the files...via Windows Explorer".

I decided to give the player one last chance so I upgraded the firmware, manually deleted al of the subfolder, dragged them into one digital soup in the root menu and then attempted to play the SA125. At this point, probably upset at my anger at its poor software design, the SA125 gave up the ghost and has not worked since. Needless to say, it is on its way back to Amazon.

I am amazed that Philips, after designing an attractively styled MP3 player, have given so little thought as to how the user would access their favourite music. The iPod has led the way for so many years that competitors only need to look and learn if they want to see the most ergnomic interface in the business.
