Beteer than a flimsy ipod - 06 Nov 2006

This is one hell of a good little machine, ive had mine for nearly a year now amd i have to say i think its the best mp3 player on the market. There is two little problems which can easily be fixwed.
No1: the connect software
If you have a problem with this software, which alot of people do there is a quick remedy to fix it. DONT USE IT! There is another piece of software released by sony called sonic stage 2.3. This is what i use. Its much more reliable, alot more better looking and its what everyone else in the world who has a sony walkman uses. Connect player only is only released to people who buy this product in the uk. I have no reason why this is as its such a poor piece of software. Sonicstage can be downloaded from the sony website for free. The files are also alot more smaller. Sonic Stage uses sony's ATRAC-3 plus file compression software. Connect player dosn't use this. I can fit nearly 500 songs per Gigabyte, which means nearly 3000 songs on the 6 Gig memory. When i was using connect player i was lucky to fit 1500. This Software is so superior to connect. My adevice is Throw that connect cd in the bin and download sonic stage.
No2: volume level
The volume on this machine is very low at full level. I can only guess that the reason for this is that some left wing nanny state puff dosn't want us damaging our poor little ears. But there is a way round this. You can get into the technical menu on the machine and change the volume limit. To get info on how to do this go to www.anythingbutipod.com and then look on the left hand side, click on sony then scroll down till you find the heading "A-1000 and A-3000 volume unlock". This will give you details of how to change the limit.
Overall this is a very good product which can take alot of punishment.
Ive dropped mine hundreds of times sat on it god knows how many times and it still works just like new, thats alot more than i can say for the flimsy little ipod which looks like it will smash into a million pieces if you dropped it on the pavement. A Very good product and by doing the things above you'll make it alot more better
An excellent little MP3 player - 26 Aug 2006

Have just received my Sony 6gb MP3 walkman and i am very impressed. Was a bit nervous after reading some of the reviews on this site regarding the Connect software that comes with the player but i needn't have worried. I have just transferred my entire MP3 collection off my laptop onto the player with no toruble. The connect software worked perfectly and all MP3 transferred over with no difficulties and no change in the sound quality. The only problem i have is that the headphones supplied are not the best fit so i am thinking about buying a different pair to take on holiday with me as i think these will drive me mad on the transatlantic flight as each time i turn my head they keep falling out.
If you are thinking about getting this MP3 player or the 8GB and 20GB version then i would definitely recommend it. I am so glad that i didn't follow the rest of the world and get an Ipod!!
Walkman 6GB - 07 Aug 2006

I was so pleased with the walkman mp3 player, and I still am. Before I bought this product, i read a lot of the reviews on here and I was a bit worried about the software. But, I honestly couldn't see the problem. Ok, maybe it does take a while to install (about 20 mins). But it was definately worth the wait. The CONNECT software was so easy to use. The player itself is excellent, the sound is great. The only thing I would recommmend when buying this product is you should buy a cover for it because it will get really scratched otherwise. But, I would ignore the bad comments about this player because it really is excellent.
Good player, bad software - 13 Jul 2006

I love this MP3 player; it's small, attractive, has good sound quality and comes with lots of added features. The different shuffles are especially good, as are the bookmarked playlists. It is reliable too, it hasn't broken down or even been scratched since getting it almost 6 months ago (compared to the iPods of both my sister and two friends, which broke after a few months).
However, and this seems to be rehashing old ground, I am among those who have had problems with the software. When I first got the player I thought the software was alright, because it was fairly straightforward and I didn't mind it being a little slow. Then things started to go wrong; my computer would freeze in the middle of ripping CDs or transferring songs, then the software wouldn't load at all, and finally it turns itself off after around two minutes. Several times after these events, it clears all the tracks from my walkman. Luckily plugging it back in seems to usually solve this problem, as long as the software is working of course.
My advice would be that if you want a good MP3 player, and don't want an iPod, then this is your best option. The only let down is the software, and if you don't mind it being a little slow (and for some people the software seems fine) then it doesn't really make much difference. I just hope Sony bring out a better version of the software and soon.
A NICE LITTLE MACHINE - 04 Jul 2006

I bought my daughter an iPod Nano and myself an NWA1000V on the same day. I found the installation of iTunes to be far easier than the installation of Connect. The main annoyance with the Connect was that I had to keep on stopping in order to install downloads at each stage. However, by following the instructions exactly, I eventually got the software installed perfectly. (During the set-up period, my computer ran slowly, but after the final update it ran as normal). There were no hitches in installing the Ipod's iTunes software.
Transferring CDs to the computer was easy, using either both iTunes for the iPod, and using Connect for the NWA.
Transferring the initial batch of tunes to each mp3 player was hassle free.
Transferring subsequent batches of tunes to the NWA (use the button with the plus sign on it)has been less of a hassle than transferring subsequent batches to the iPod. I suppose that my mind is more sympathetic to the modus operandi of Connect.
I think that I am equally happy with the sounds of the iPod and the Sony.
My daughter has a lot of friends who each have a white iPod Nano with a pink case. I prefer the the style and the colour of the Sony.
Given that I installed both sets of software on the same day, and that I have listened to both machines, I feel that I could recommend both.
Don't be put off by the reviewers who say that Connect is unusable. You just have to follow the instructions to the letter, which is what you'd probably expect anyway.
