Sony NWE015 - 2GB MP3 Walkman Ruined by Sonic Stage - 16 Mar 2008

What could have been a 5 star piece of kit is totally ruined by the useless Sonic Stage Software, the use of which is not optional. Drag and drop is widely available on 'no name' players yet Sony foist their badly thought out and cumbersome software on us... can't they accept that they are highly regarded for their hardware and forget fumbing about with the rest? I am software savvy but 3 hours footering about on a fast pc to get music onto a 2 gig player is not acceptable by any standards. I have tossed my Walkman to the back of a drawer and am using a cheaper, less sexy bit of kit (not Sony) that sounds just as good. Shame on you for the software, Sony.
high quality mp3 player from sony - 09 Nov 2007

i recently purchased the 4gb version of this unit from currys for the surprisingly cheap price of 54.99. it was reduced from 100.
i chose this player due to the large storage capacity for the price (4mb version) and my faith in the build and sound quality of sony units.
i was definitely not disappointed. the unit looks and feels very sleek, it is not too heavy or too light and the buttons are conveniently located. as i expected, the menu systems are simple and easily navigated while the solid hold button prevents accidental access.
the unit's 3 line display presents a bright, detailed and sharp image which helps finding what you want very easy. the earphones provided are the basic sony pair which do the job, however the in ear bud style ones are superior in my opinion.
i would advise that people shouldnt be too deterred by bad reviews of sonic stage (the software provided with the player) which MUST be used to add playable music files to the mp3 player. i found it easy to install and simple to use. for example, to copy a cd to the player, all you have to do is click 'import cd', then select the cd you have imported and click 'copy to device'. to copy music files from the computer to the player, all you have to do is click 'import music files', find it in my computer etc its very easy. also the sonic stage software finds detailed album information rapidly using 'gracenote'.
once the music has been transferred to the player, which is done by removing the cap located at one end of the player and plugging directly into your computer's usb port (this also charges the unit), it is stored in a logial menu system where tracks can be identified by album, artist, or track name.
the sound quality of the player is very good. it features a 2 stage bass boost which is very punchy and also has a customisable equaliser for the technically orientated music fan. the player also boasts three forms of 'intelligent shuffle' for those who like to mix it up a bit.
the battery life apparently lasts up to 30 hours, however i am yet to test this claim. although i can confirm that the player charges very quickly. it also has various power saving options to maximise the battery life.
in my view its a great purchase, especially if you get it at the price i got it for (55quid for the 4mb version, check the currys website). this is another solid product from sony
GOOD PLAYER, BAD SOFTWARE - 01 Nov 2007

I agree with the other users, the software is a nightmare to use. Very user-unfriendly indeed. The player and music playback are of good quality as expected from Sony though.
WHY OH WHY DON'T YOU JUST WORK ON MEDIA PLAYER... - 21 Oct 2007

I've just bought one of these and am depressed to find that what is undoubtably a good solid bit of hardware with an impressive 30hr battery life is unfortunately undermined by the fact that Sony insist on using all there own software. Those looking for that plug-and-play dream walk away now. You have to install Sony's software, do the registration, import your music and flip through the user guides just to remove the lame demo music that Sony really think you'll like... Unfortunate since Windows Media Player sees it and is happy to load onto it but oh-no, it just won't play. Hours of fiddling around to come...
Pure Sony quality, but... - 01 Oct 2007

Everything about this MP3 player reeks of quality, and i really couldn't be happier with it except for one thing: it's reliance on the SonicStage software that comes with it.
It IS possible to read & write directly to the player as if it were just another flash memory drive, however for music to be playable it has to be transferred to the device using SonicStage. Why on earth it's possible for cheap non-branded MP3 players to play music directly from files dragged and dropped to the deivice, but not possible for this high quality Sony product is beyond me! Using SonicStage to organise the music on your player is awkward and annoying to do, however despite this annoyance I'd still reccomend this player to anyone- the pro's far outweigh the con's.
