5 Reviews for Sony NWS205 - 2GB Walkman MP3 Player - Black
Great product - terrrible support and software! - 19 Dec 2007

I purchased this one year ago as a gift for my wife as she is a keen runner. In principle right choice specific product. But she has had issue after issue with the Sonicstage software. unable to sync / cannot recognise player. Now I understand that Sony has moved to allowing Windows Media Player software on all future products, but for those who trusted the brand and purchased a niche product you are left out on a limb. My advice is do not buy it as Sony do not support it and the operating software will not get any better.
never sony again! - 26 Aug 2007

The player itself is really cool packed with lots of more or less useful options and controls (see sony website for full details!), but the way the music is transferred to and from the device is absolutely appalling. If you consider buying this player please bear in minfd the following few points:
1. You can't simply drag and drop music files, as with most of mp3 devices, if you want to be able to play them. You will still be able to drag and drop items into the player folder on your PC, but that way you'll only use the player as a USB storage device. This means you won't beable to transfer music to/from a PC that does not have Sonic Stage installed on it, i.e. if you wish to upload something from a friend's PC be sure to bring the installation disc along with you, beause PC won't usually look up the driver on the net.
2. The Sonic Stage library is quite cumbersome and does not provide for easy manageability of tracks. Furthermore, if you amend the ID3 tags for a track (title, album, artist name etc), this will also change the appearance of the file on your PC, usually by turning it into a random set of letters and digits. Attempts to amend this back to the original will destroy the linkage between the file and the Sonic Stage library - getting you into a catch22 situation.
3. The most daunting aspect yet of using the player is probably that you can't actually transfer music from the device to a PC unless there is similar file in the Sonic Stage library on that PC, i.e. the very same file is already on the PC (but why would you want to transfer one in such an event???!). It is amazing how far samurai thinking and a bottle of sake can take Sony engineers at times! :)
4. On top of all the above, the player can only be recharged via a USB slot, so unless you have PCs both at home and in the office, that is not your kinda mp3 player. For that very same reason, losing the USB cable renders the player useless.
The next time I buy an mp3 player I'll make sure it allows for a simple drag-and-drop 2-way transfer of files and is not bound to user-unfriendly Sony software.
Cheers all!
This is a Sports player not a fashion statement. - 04 Aug 2007

I have been using MP3 players for around 4 years now, primarily in the Gym. (In fact I was the first person to do so) I have owned around 6 MP3 players. (Sweat and MP3 players don't seem to mix well)
This Sony MP3 player is designed for use in the Gym. It is small, it comes with its own arm band and it is sweat proof and most of all it has been designed ergomically.
If you want to wear a fashion statement buy something else. If you want a tool you can use under a running jacket, then have a look at this one.) As for the Sonic Stage Software. I haven't experienced any problems I use XP, I convert all my Music first in MP3, then convert those files into the Sony Format.
On the headphones issue I am unable to wear the hard plastic headphones that have come supplied with every MP3 player I have bought. I buy the Silicone ear bud types. (Plenty on the market) which are a lot more comfortable and actually sound a lot better. (But then I prefer comfort over looks)
Battery wise I have been to the gym 3 times this week totalling 6 hours and I have around half a charge left. If I have any gripe it is how easy it is knock the USB cable out of the player when I am charging it up. Other than that this has to be the one of the best players I have used for the gym. Once again this is a Sports player and not a fashion statement. And no I don't work for Sony.
Software is terrible - 31 Jul 2007

f you buy this product you will regret it, the software is terrible, Sony issued it with their CONNECT software which was supposed to rival itunes. However they have had so many problems with CONNECT they have ditched it and gone back to the previous software Sonic Stage. However the recommended version of Sonic Stage 4.3 fails on installation., rendering the player as useless. Don't believe me, try Googling Sonic Stage problems and you will find that hundreds of people have Sony MP3 players that now do not work. Take my advice look elsewhere. Sony are ignoring complaints. People are looking for alternatives - Google Sonic Stage Alternatives.
Awesome Little Player - 23 Jul 2007

After reading various reviews I was a little hesitant about going for this player, but then one day decided to go for it.
The build quality is good and the features impressive. The battery life is as good as stated and as everyone else says; the supplied headphones are rubbish. What MP3 player ships with good headphones though? I picked up some Sennheiser CX 300's and it sounds amazing - possibly even too loud.
Being a Mac user the software was my biggest concern, especially considering it only runs on windows. After some time googling i came across a small Java based application that you copy onto the player and allows you to easily add music.
Have a look for 'NWE00X working in Linux', which should bring it up. This little app has solved all my problems and adding/deleting music is now as easy as pie.
I'd rate the player 5 stars if it weren't for the software issue, as the hardware really is top-notch. Absolutely ace for the gym, or any type of exercise.
Buy one today and enjoy - I would shop around though as I only paid £50 for mine!
