What More Can I Say... - 24 Oct 2007

The thing that really impressed me with this little beauty, is that you can transfer Audio Cassettes, and Vinyl LPs onto CD! To do this you will require a special lead, that can be obtained from any Sony Centre for around £15.... It is so simple to do, plug one end into the headphone socket of your Hi Fi, and the other obviously into the Sony Walkman, start playing your Cassette or Vinyl, press record on Sony Walman, and your away. You then transfer it into Sonic Stage software to burn off onto a CD.
If you need more advice on how to do the above, then pop into your local Sony Centre, I am sure they will be only to glad to help.
You can also charge the built in battery from the mains, by obtaining an adapter again from Sony Centre for around £15...
One thing I cannot do with mine, is to transfer the album covers onto the device (maybe it's me),but all in all, this is an outstanding little gem, you will not be disappointed if you purchase one from Amazon......
A great little player! - 27 Jun 2007

What can I say? This little thing is a gem. Excellent sound quality, fantastic battery life and a vibrant display. Yes, you can even just about see the album art on the display.
Downsides: In earlier models you could use 'groups' to organise the order in which you listen to your music in. Sadly, they have change this format, but I have found a work-around. Sonic Stage isn't great and playlists are not easy to manage. These are minor quibbles however, especially since I've found a work around for the 'group' problem:
My advice is to use the 'Genre' tag to take ten or so albums you want to listen to most and, using Sonic Stage, name the Genre tag (for example) '1 U2 Greatest Hits', '2 REM Out of Time' etc for your most recent albums. It's important to put a number first as this will be the order which they are played in. Then on the player itself and select 'Settings' then go to 'Sort' and select 'Sort Genre'. Now, putting the scroll wheel to 'folder' mode will allow the user select genre's AND the albums you want to listen to most! Push down the scroll wheel and you can select the tracks.
This workaround has made a big difference to the way I use the player, I can now select albums I want to listen to without even needing to look at the screen.
NW-S706 - Detailed Review - 16 Jun 2007

When Sony introduced the cassette WAlkman they revolutionised how people listened to music and furthered it with MD (and Hi-MD) and the Discman but have since lost their way in the mp3 market. With the NW-S7xx range Sony have taken personal audio to the next level.
Overview:
I've been using this player for over four months now and in terms of out of the box audio
quality this player cannot be faulted, the features of the player plus the bundled phones
make it one of the best players on the market.
For: sound quality, build, battery life, bundles phones, bluetooth (bought seperately)
Against: Sonicstage software is still a pain to use (but improving), you may want more than
4gb storage
In Detail:
Build quality 10/10 - it's a stunning little player (about the same size as a cigarette
lighter) which feels solid and manufactured well as one would expect from Sony, the use of
metal around the edges of the player enhances the appearance, albeit adding weight which is
no bad thing as the player is still light.
Sound quality 9/10 - just about the best you can get without buying £50+ headphones. The
earphones are comfortable (3 sizes of plugs come bundled to fit your ears), the audio is
clear throughout the ranges, unlike most bundled phones the bass is loud, clear and does not
inhibit the treble and mid ranges. The phones also feature noise reduction, which reduces
the ambient noise around you - ideal when in a noisy environment such as on a train or a
plane.
The player itself has an equalizer to adjust the levels, so you can have the bass and other
frequencies as high or low as you wish to get the optimum aural experience, you can also
swtich between two presets which is ideal if you listen to two different genres of music
e.g. classical and dance.
Clear stereo prevents the left and right audio channels from bleeding into each other, so
you get true stereo as intended. Dynamic normalizer ensures your various music plays at a
similar volume, ensuring you don't go from a listening to a quiet song to having you ears
bleed.
Usability 8/10 - Due to its size it is not as easy to get through tracks as other players,
but with music arranged logically into various categories such as artist, album, track title
it's easy to find the song you want. You can also skip between songs and albums easily with
a click of the forward/reverse switch and search through albums by album art.
Software 7/10 - Sonicstage is notoriously bad software for music management (compared to
itunes), and you have to use it to transfer tracks to the player. But it is improving and
does ensure that your music is arranged perfectly on the player.
Battery life 10/10 - you can expect 30+ hours of playback easily, the 50 hours stated refers
to having noise reduction, clear stereo and other options turned off. To be honest you will
probably never run out of battery within normal use, plus 3 mins charge for 3 hours playback
ensures that the player is ready whenever you need it.
Overall 9/10
Conclusion:
For less than £130 this is one of the best players out there, it holds a good amount of
music with excellent audio quality and battery life which won't leave you stranded with
silence. Personally I think the current Sony range of mp3 and now portable video players are
among the best on the market, the NW-S7xx range isn't the ipod killer, nor is it meant to
be, it does exactly what it says; give you superb personal audio out of the box.
Complicated but worth it!!! - 21 May 2007

I had been using a 60Gb Ipod video on a trial run from a friend. I soon realised that the video function for me was like a camera on a mobile phone. I used it a couple of times at first but then resorted back to just listening to the music. After I returned the Ipod i decided to go for a smaller MP3 player. I brought a Samsing 4Gb with a sliding out speaker. But this broke within a couple of days. Thank goodness for Amazon. I then decided to buy the Sony NWS706. The player was very small. But despite its size was actually quite heavy. When I put the player in my shirt pocket it was quite noticable. However with the weight came the feel of excellent build quality. The quality of sound was better than the Ipod and I would say on par with the Samsung. The product was complicated to use at first as was the software. But once you get use to it the product is very rewarding.
Great MP3 player with a learning curve - 20 May 2007

I'd agree with alot of reviews about SonicStage not being that great or as intuitive as say Anapod for the iPod but SonicStage doesn't take long to get used to. SonicStage installed fairly painfully and I had to download a copy of the Gracenote installer but once setup, I think SonicStage and Gracenote are easy to use for ripping CDs and transferring them to the player.
It probably means you need to set aside an hour to install and get used to the software, a quick read of the Sony quickstart guide and you're up and running.
The player itself is extremely simple to use and very tuneable soundwise, alot better than my iPod in that respect so I'd definitely recommend the Sony to anyone intersted in a compact and versatile MP3/FM player.
