Second Sony MP3 player that has broken - 22 Feb 2008

I bought one of these in Currys and it died after six months. I couldn't charge it at all. Took it back to Currys and they said that as it was discontinued all they would do is give me a similar one - they offered 1GB when mine was 8. Clearly their one year guarantee isn't worth much, let alone the three year one which I had foolishly paid for.

I sent it back to Sony for repair and they sent a bill for £30 saying it was my fault it had broken as it had had water damage. The walkman had been nowhere near any water and hadn't even been to a humid country so this is nonsense. But I have to pay £30 for them to look at it apparently. Needless to say I won't be paying £30 to get a broken Walkman back. The other MP3 Walman I bought previously also died after about a year as well, with no explanation.

Sadly I feel I now have to resort to buying an iPod. I have resisted this as I have always felt that the success of them was down to excellent marketing rather than quality, and had believed that Sony was bound to get it right. How wrong I was...

Oh and the software is irritating as well, yes..

NW A1200 - 15 Nov 2007

This mp3 can be annoying as many people say with the font being too big which makes the viewing hard etc. But i think all that can be forgotten because sony's compression of songs to Atraac3plus is great, i currently have just over 2000 songs on this player and still have 3gb of memory left to add to.

Player great, Sonicstage software rubbish - 31 Oct 2007

I've owned my A1200 8gb now for 18 months or so. The sound is good, but the supplied headphones are rubbish. The display on the unit is really too small. Browsing your albums is tedious, as the font is too big and titles tend to run off to the right. So it's a bit irritating to say the least.
Sadly the biggest let down is the software you have to use to load your tracks to the unit - SonicStage. It is truly terrible, even the latest v4.3. Worst still, the tracks are always converted to Sony's proprietory format (AAC) and, worse still, you can't unload the tracks from the unit.
I would not buy one of these units because of SonicStage. If you could drag/drop MP3s then it would be fine.

NW 1200 - Not good, not bad - a bit of both - 19 Sep 2007

I've read mixed reviews of this product, including one gentleman who couldn't find the hold switch over its years of use and slammed the unit for being accidentally switched on.

The player itself is of good quality - it looks nice, comes with a USB lead that also fits into a wall charger, and has nice sound quality. There's actually a problem with the iPod's audio design where when driving headphones it doesn't produce proper bass - Sony have avoided this trap with their 30 years of portable audio experience and pioneering of the Walkman portable tape player.

The big letdown is the awful software - depending on your setup you'll find that it's glitchy or just plain unusable. Even Sony tell you the Connect software is discontinued and to use the newer Sonic Stage application. As such, if this player was supported by iTunes or - best of all - if you could drag and drop in Windows Explorer, it would be a good 4 or 5 stars. As such, the software is that bad that it drags it down.

A handy feature of this player, and many like it, is that you can use it as a portable drive - for this feature you do drag and drop, although like the iPod, you can't play audio files transferred in this manner.

in summary, it's nice quality - although the supplied headphones are weak - and downloading the Sonic Stage software is an improvement. There's also third party software out there, like pretty much every other player, but that's for another review.

Slow and clunky: if I could rate lower than 1 I would. - 11 Sep 2007

I got this product at a reduced price due to it being a returned and unwanted item. I thought, being a Sony Walkman brand, that it would be a decent and affordable MP3 player that would be durable. Unfortunately this player was a massive failure at almost every design level. The lack of foresight to include an on/off button and instead rely on touching any buttons to turn the machine on was, at first glance, a terrible idea. On further examination, their being a glaring and useless "artist link" button jutting out the side, which always gets pushed in and thusly drains the battery (which is poor itself) beggars belief.

The screens monochrome look seems decent...but only in complete darkness. On a sunny day it is near impossible to see anything on the screen.

The random play plays the same songs over and over again.

The artist link search, when it actually works, is a pointless gimmick, and 9 out of 10 times it fails to find anything anyway.

The player crashed - repeatedly, but only just after the warranty expired. Typical. 14 months after purchase it is now completely unusable.

But the worst offender is the atrocious Sonic Stage software that comes bundled with this piece of trash. The slowest and most un user friendly interface imaginable, it is unfathomably useless. The fact that sony has failed to provide any updates to this software demonstrates how they too must view it as a useless venture. I have had to order a new MP3 now, and in some ways am glad to have a good enough reason to be rid of this brand. Stay away from this monster!
