Sony rules! - 13 Jan 2008

What a lovely gadget! At the time when this guy hit the market, Apple had no competition for it. The only thing I like about Apple is the pincher mechanism on the Shuffle.

This is a sexy and robust little toy, and it plays for so long, I completely forget to charge it.

The software and music format is a bit of a pain, but that's a minor.

The casing and 'magic' screen are gorgeous.

As always, when in doubt, buy the Sony!!!

I've seen quite a number of negative views about this product! Alot of people have said they've been having problems with the software - Sonicstage. I have to say personally, that it hasn't given me any major problems yet, but have to agree with the majority that Sonicstage could have been improved upon, especially since it's with an mp3 of such high calibre! sometimes it freezes & needs me to start it back up again..things like that, which I know isn't major but it gets annoying. The headphones! - they're rubbish! I don't like them, they're flimsy & look basic, no earbuds! but having said that, I like how they've included an extension cord for them, so you can move around a bit..
Now the machine itself. It's a beauty. Deep lush purple and sits in your palm like a bar of otherworldly soap! I love holding this device, & the front has a lovely polished look, so I'm always careful to avoid getting fingerprints on it! Navigation's relatively easy. I could have managed it without looking at the manual, quite self-explanitory with the icons and I really like the 'top 100' and 'intelligent shuffle' features.
I keep my volume at level 19/20. loud enough for me! as it does sound very loud at full volume. It's also cool how you can rate your songs. Annoying little things: The loud 'beep' sound it makes whenever you change a song, but I think there's something on the device which lets you get rid of it.
The 'hold on' 'hold off' feature which locks the controls. I find this pointless to be honest, as after you've locked it, a sign appears asking you to keep pressing hold until the controls are locked, so what's the point in that, if you want it locked and want to deny other people access to your tunes? - I've only had this device for 2 days, so still playing around with it! Has a clock and a calender for people on the move. The writing is bright clear neon green which makes it very easy to read. It's such an intelligent and charasmatic little thing! and when you're playing a song you get a little screensaver which you can choose the design of.
All in all, It's a good quality mp3. Sony know there stuff. I'm not really fussed about the software not being as high ranking as the mp3, just one of those things i feel could have been made better, including the damn headphones! if both of these had been improved upon, it would have been perfect! However nothing's perfect in life is it?
My mp3..'Violet' I call her, has literally become my new best friend as she's constantly there with me. always reliable & never answers back ha ha! smart, quirky, yet enigmatic..wonderful! If you love PURPLE, you need this baby! All in all, I think it's wonderful, and hope it's still popular in years to come!

Nice Player - Ruined By Appalling Software - 20 Jun 2007

I've owned this player for three months now. As an object the player is truly splendid with a sexy design, tactile feel & some useful features. However, all these plus points are sadly overshadowed by the truly appalling interface software which you are forced to use. Sony use a proprietary file type and related management software on their players & it is slow, clunky, crude & frequently locks. It really is that bad - even in the latest version (4.3) and there is no other option. To spell this out, buy the player and you must use Sony 'Sonicstage' - so forget MS MediaPlayer, WINAMP or whatever your favourite interface is. Music files are managed in Sony's own ATRAC format so only their interface will work. Other niggles, as if the interface is not enough, - the player marks & scratches easily and the display is difficult to read in direct sunlight. Buy Sony's dedicated leather carry case (which I have) & it still looks really cool, but the downside here is that with the belt clip attached the case + player is around 2 inches thick, which is hardly sleek. Bottom line - lovely little player but too many downsides. Not recommended
